On underachieving, watermelons and grapes
Years ago, some colleagues of mine were talking about the attributes of the U.S. men's national team. One of us said that the U.S. players never give up, that they would keep grinding away, even in defeat. Well, I never thought I'd see the day, but Saturday's fiasco of a third-place game turned into an embarrassment for U.S. Soccer and U.S. soccer.

July 26, 2015 EVERYTHING CHANGES
Addition of Pirlo, Lampard could be game changers for NYC FC
BRONX, NY---Most expansion teams find first-year success difficult to come by. Lineup and roster changes are inevitable. Sometimes they are successful, sometimes not so much. For New York City FC, the arrivals of Frank Lampard, who has yet to play because of a nagging thigh injury, and Andrea Pirlo, who made his debut in Sunday’s 5-3 win over fellow expansion side Orlando City SC, might have shifted the playing field. Perhaps even seismically.

July 25, 2015 CUTTONE’S CONCEPTS
Taking the long view with the US National Team
CHESTER, Pa.---Let’s be clear. Results matter in sports. Coaches who don’t get results get fired. It's plain and simple. But there are different kind of results. Yes, winning the Gold Cup, appearing in the final, even winning the third place game should mean something. Same for getting to the Confederations Cup, even though it is a contrived tournament created by FIFA to further clog the calendar and extract money from fans and sponsors. But not winning those competitions (or in the case of the Confederations Cup not getting there) is not the end of the world.

Cosmos, Indy to play 6th consecutive tie
So what were the odds of the Cosmos playing to a sixth consecutive draw with the Indy Eleven? They have to be astronomical. On Saturday night, the two North American Soccer League foes did just that, playing to a 1-1 tie before 10,206 spectators at Michael A. Carroll Stadium.

Putting the 1969 loss into perspective and other stuff
Yes, American soccer fans, the semifinal elimination loss to Jamaica from the CONCACAF Gold Cup hurts, as it should. It shows that millions of U.S. soccer supporters care about the 2-1 loss to the Reggae Boyz, only the second time the Americans have lost to a Caribbean side on home soil.
