LIVERPOOL, England -- Despite playing more than half the game a man down due to a red card, Liverpool managed a 1-0 English Premier League derby win over Everton FC Saturday.
U.S. international Landon Donovan and Tim Howard played the full 90 minutes for the Toffees. Donovan, on loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy through March 15, performed at right midfield, but did not have much of an impact on the game at Anfield.
Howard, a former MetroStars goalkeeper, had his share of the blame on the Liverpool goal in the 55th minute. Just before a corner kick, Howard shoved Dirk Kuyt a bit in front of the net. But he could not stop Kuyt from putting the the game-winner away from two yards out.
Everton enjoyed a man advantage for almost an hour after Sotirios Kyrgiakos was red carded. However, the visitors never could take advantage of it in the scoring could
Marouane Fellaini was injured on the red card and was taken out of the match.
Everton's South African star Steven Pienaar received his second yellow during stoppage time and was sent off as well. Pienaar will miss a game due to the red-card suspension.
