New York Red Bulls midfielder Amado Guevara was named MLS player of the month for October, the league announced Wednesday.
Guevara played a key role in helping the Red Bulls clinch an unprecedented fourth successive berth in the MLS playoffs, connecting for a hat-trick in a 3-2 triumph over the Kansas City Wizards Oct. 14.
He also scored a goal against the Colorado Rapids Oct. 7, helping the Red Bulls to a 1-1 draw with the Rapids.
In his last 15 games, Guevara has seven goals and five assists while serving as team captain. Guevara is tied with the retired Tab Ramos for the all-time club record in career assists with 36.
Guevara captured Red Bulls' Golden Boot honors, leading the team in scoring with eight goals. He also is tied for the most assists with five.
Guevara, the 2004 MLS MVP, has proven to be one of the league's top players. He was also named the 2004 MetroStars MVP and was a member of the 2005 MLS all-star team.
This was Guevara’s second career player of the month award, also winning in July 2004.
He also has been named player of the week four times in his four-year MLS career, most recently on Oct. 16.
Guevara and the Red Bulls will face D.C. United in the first leg of the Eastern Conference semifinal series at Giants Stadium at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The MLS player of the month is selected following the last game of each month throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association. PSRA votes among players nominated by their respective teams.
