Edwards strikes twice in Adelphi semi win


GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Omar Edwards scored twice as the top-seeded Adelphi University men struck for three first-half goals en route to a 3-0 victory over No. 4 New Jersey Institute of Technology in the semifinals of the Atlantic Soccer Conference tournaemnt on Friday.

The Panthers improveology, d to 8-9-1 while NJIT dropped to 5-12-2.

Edwards got his team going with two first half goals, the first coming in the fourth minute. In an unassisted effort, he picked up a loose ball in front of the net, whipped around and fired it point blank toward the the target. The ball sailed past a diving Lars Maalen-Johansen.

Adam Weinzimer scored for Adelphi off a corner kick in the 26th minute. Domenico Parrell lofted the ball inside the the penalty area, where Weinzimer headed the ball on just the right angle to catch the back of the right side of the net.

The Panthers struck again in the 34th minute mark when Parrell squeezed a pass through the defense to Edwards, who broke through two defenders and fired a shot off his right foot to find the back of the net.

Goalkkeeper Kyle Blackmer, who came in for mainstay Christopher Herrera in the third minute, made three saves.

The Panthers will face No. 2 Longwood in the championship game on Motamed Field at noon on Sunday.
