Second round recaps

DUKE BLUE DEVILS 2, MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS 1
EAST LANSING, Mich.-- Christian Ibeagha and Andrew Wenger scored first half goals to lead Duke to a 2-1 win over Michigan State.

The Blue Devils took led in the 29th minute on Ibeagha’s goal and increased it to 2-0 just before the half on Wenger’s tally. The Spartans rallied late in the second half on a goal by Ruben Bega off a 19 yard free kick.

The Blue Devils (14-6)advance to the third round for the first time since 2006. Michigan State ends their season with an 11-8-2 record.

HARVARD CRIMSON 3, MONMOUTH HAWKS 0
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard scored twice in the second half to defeat Monmouth, 3-0, in a second-round game of the 2009 NCAA tournament Sunday afternoon. In front of 1,312 fans at Ohiri Field.

Freshman Richard Smith netted the game-winning goal, in the 32nd minute, while seniors Andre Akpan and Adam Rousmaniere each scored in the second half . With the goal, Akpan tied Chris Ohiri ’64 for first on Harvard’s all-time career goals list with 47. Sophomore goalkeeper Austin Harms earned his seventh shutout of the year, stopping two shots, one in each half.

Harvard (14-3-1) will host Maryland (14-5-2), the defending national champion, in a third-round matchup at Ohiri Field Sunday, Nov. 29. Game time has not yet been announced. Monmouth finishes their season at 18-2-2.

PORTLAND PILOTS 2, NORTH CAROLINA STATE WOLFPACK 1
RALEIGH, NC---Portland jumped out to an early lead and went on to defeat North Carolina state 2-1 in a second round game on Sunday.

Drew Chrostek gave the Pilots the lead 63 seconds into the game. The Wolfpack equalized in the 59th minute on a goal by Akil DeFreitas, but Ryan Luke put the game winner away in the 62nd minute.
Portland (12-5-5) will face Virginia next Sunday, while North Carolina ends at 13-7-2.

DRAKE BULLDOGS 1, OHIO STATE BUCKEYES 0, OT
COLUMBUS, Ohio---Luke Gorczyca scored in the 97th minute as Drake upset Big Ten Champion Ohio State 1-0 at Jesse Owens Stadium on Sunday.
Gorczyca scored the game winner after a scramble in the box following a corner kick.

Ohio State ends its season at 12-5-4, while Drake (15-6-2) moves on to face Boston College, in their first appearance in the Sweet 16.

VIRGINIA CAVALIERS 5, BUCKNELL BISON 0
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va---Will Bates scored three goals as Virginia shutout Bucknell 5-0 in front of 2,279 at Klockner Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Tony Tchani had a goal and two assists for the Cavaliers, while Hunter Jumper had a goal and an assist.

Virginia goalkeeper Diego Restrepo made five saves to post his ninth consecutive shutout, while breaking the school’s all-time shutout streak of 891:25 set by Tony Meola in 1988.

Virginia (15-3-3) will face Portland in the round of 16. Bucknell finishes with a 16-6-0 record.

NORTH CAROLINA TARHEELS 2, BROWN BEARS 0
CHAPEL HILL, NC---Billy Schuler and Alex Dixon both scored on assists by Kirk Urso as North Carolina defeated Brown 2-0 at Fetzer Field on Sunday.
Schuler gave the Tar Heels the lead in the 20th minute and Dixon provided an insurance strike in the 89th. Goalkeeper Brooks Haggerty posted his 10th shutout in 19 games

North Carolina (14-2-3) advances to face Indiana. Brown ends the season with an 11-3-5 record.

TULSA GOLDEN HURRICANES 4, SAINT LOUIS BILLIKENS 3 OT
TULSA, Okla---Ashley McInnes scored in the 98th minute to give Tulsa a 4-2 win over Saint Louis at Hurricane Stadium Sunday.

The Billikens had come back from deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 to force the overtime. Austin Neal and Blain Gonsalves gave Tulsa a 2-0 lead in the first half. Alex Sweetin scored St. Louis’ first two goals and James Dice equalized with just five seconds left in regulation.

Tulsa (14-4-2) will face Northwestern in the round of 16. The Billikens end their season with a 15-7-0 record.

INDIANA HOOSIERS 1, BUTLER BULLDOGS 0
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University overcame a tenacious Butler defense to snatch a 1-0 win and advance to the third round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship Sunday on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.

The Hoosiers (12-9-1) will face No. 5 seed North Carolina (14-2-3) on Sunday, November 29 in Chapel Hill. Butler finishes the season with a 14-3-2 record.

Indiana managed only nine shots, but that was more than enough. Will Bruin put the game way in the 58th minute, redirecting Darren Yeagle’s cross in from the far post for his fifth game-winner and team-leading ninth goal of the season.

NORTHWESTERN WILDCATS 2, NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH 0
EVANSTON, Ill.—The Northwestern Wildcats put three shots on goal against Notre Dame on Sunday, and scored every time, coming away with a 3-1 win at Lakeside Field and a berth in the third round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship.

The Wildcats will travel to face eighth-seeded Tulsa in the third round. Date and time have not yet been finalized.

Jack Hilgard scored twice for the Wildcats, both times on headers, and goalkeeper Misha Rosenthal made a season-high 11 saves – ten of them after halftime – to preserve the win.

MARYLAND TERAPINS 2, PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS 1
COLLEGE PARK, Md---Billy Cortes had a goal and an assist Jason Herrick scored the game winner in the 86th minute to propel Maryland to their eighth straight appearance in the NCAA round of 16 with a 2-1 win over Penn State on Sunday.

Cortes gave the Terps the lead in the 25th minute. The Nittany Lions equalized in the 49th on a goal by Brian Forgue. Herricks netted the winner by poking in a deflection from Cortes.

Maryland (14-5-2) will face Harvard next Sunday. Penn State finishes at 12-8-2.

AKRON ZIPS 2, SOUTH FLORIDA BULLS 0
AKRON, Ohio---Anthony Ampaipitakwong scored both goals as Akron continued their season long winning streak with a 2-0 victory over South Florida on Sunday.

The win, the 21st straight for the Zips matches the second longest in NCAA history. Akron advances to the Round of 16 for the second straight year.
Ampaipitakwong scored on a 23 yard free kick in the 25th minute, then added a 22 yard strike in the 33rd minute.

Akron (21-0-0) will face Stanford. South Florida finishes their season with a 14-4-3 record.

BOSTON COLLEGE EAGLES 1, ST. JOHN’S REDMEN 0
JAMAICA, N.Y. – Junior co-captain Karl Reddick scored the decisive goal – the game’s only score – in the eighth minute to lead Boston College to a 1-0 victory over No. 14 St. John’s in the second round of the 2009 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship before 2,128 fans at Belson Stadium.

BC (14-8-0) will face Drake in the tournament’s round of 16 on Sunday, Nov. 29. Game site and time are to be announced. It marks the first time since 2002 that BC has advanced to the round of 16 teams. The Eagles win snapped St. John’s (9-3-9) 21-game home win streak during which the team went 17-0-4

WAKE FOREST DEMON DECONS 2, UNC WILMINGTON SEAHAWKS 1
WINSTON-SALEM, NC--- Austin da Luz and Anthony Arena each scored to help Wake Forest to a 2-1 win over UNC Wilmington at Spry Field on Sunday.

With the victory, Wake Forest improves to 15-3-3, while UNC-Wilmington closes its season with a 14-3-5 record. Wake Forest will play in state rival Duke in the Round fo 16.

Da Luze game Wake the 1-0 lead in the the 35rh minute. Arena added an insuraqnce goal in the 76th minute. The Seahawks pulled one back in the 86th minute when Shawn Guderian scored from close range.

UCLA BRUINS 2, SACRAMENTO STATE HORNETS 1
LOS ANGELES---Freshman forward Chandler Hoffman scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute to lead sixth-seeded UCLA to a 2-1 victory over Sacramento State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night. The Bruins (11-3-4) advance to the third round and will host UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 5 pm at Drake Stadium.

UCLA took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Kyle Nakazawa converted a penalty kick in the 31st minute. Max Alvarez curled a long-distance shot into the upper left corner to tie the match at 1-1 in the 75th minute.

STANFORD CARDINAL 1, UC IRVINE ANTEATERS 0
IRVINE, Calif.--- Daniel Leon scored in the 36th minute to give Stanford a 1-0 win over California-Irvine at Anteater Stadium Sunday.

Stanford (12-5-2) advances to face #1 seed Akron in the round of 16. UCI finished with a 15-7 record.

UC SANTA BARBARA GAUCHOS 1, SAN DIEGO TOREROS 0
SAN DIEGO - David Walker scored in the 44th minute to propel No. 5 UC Santa Barbara to a 1-0 win over San Diego (12-6-2) in a NCAA Second Round game Sunday at Torero Stadium.

Walker scored on the first Gaucho shot of the game, breaking San Diego’s streak of six consecutive games without allowing a first-half goal.

The Gauchos will play UCLA in the Third Round at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 29.
