February 2, 2010 TOP MEN'S COLLEGE PLAYER Ryan is Monmouth's big hope
Monmouth University junior forward Ryan Kinne capped a memorable 2009 as he was named the BigAppleSoccer.com men's college player of the year.
Kinne, who hails from Naugatuck, Conn., played a vital role in the Hawks (18-2-2) reaching the NCAA Division I tournament. They were eliminated in second round, the best finish in program history.
Kinne beat out four other finalists for the award -- Adelphi freshman forward Issa Tall, Fairleigh Dickinson freshman forward Dominic Reinold, St. John's junior forward Sverre Wegge Gundhus and Fordham sophomore midfielder Tim Richardson.
Monmouth coach Robert McCourt wasn't surprised at Kinne's success. “I couldn’t be more happy for Ryan, he had another exceptional season at Monmouth," he said. "Being named a first team All-American is an amazing accomplishment and he is the epitome of the term student-athlete. His talent, determination and leadership have enabled him to have a lot of success. All of his accolades are a direct reflection of the hard work he puts into his development as a player.”
Kinne was a first team NSCAA Division I All-American. He took home Northeast Conference player of the year honors after leading Monmouth's offense. The junior Hermann Award Watch List semifinalist led the Hawks with 10 goals and seven assists, including six game-winning goals. He was also named to the All-NEC first team for the second straight season.
