Marquette-Georgetown square off for Big East title
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – No. 15 Marquette (15-2-2) and No. 13 Georgetown (15-2-3) square off for the Big East Women’s Soccer Championship on Sunday, Nov. 4 at Noon at RentschlerField in East Hartford, Conn. Both teams are looking to earn their first women’s soccer tournament title.
In semifinal action on Friday, Marquette beat Notre Dame 1-0. Georgetown tied USF 1-1, but edged the Bulls 5-4 on penalty kicks to advance.
A pair of major award winners will be on the field as BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Daphne Corboz (Georgetown) will face BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Ally Miller (Marquette). It is just the third meeting between the teams, and their first since Oct. 3, 2010 in Washington, D.C.
Marquette has recorded 14 shutouts this season, which leads the league. Georgetown ranks second with 13. Marquette averages 2.7 goals per game, tops in the league, while Georgetown ranks second at 2.3.
Sunday marks just the third time that Marquette will meet Georgetown and the first time in postseason play. Each team has one win in the series, which came on the road. The Golden Eagles last met GU on Oct. 3, 2010 in Washington, D.C.
The BIG EAST also is assisting an effort with the Red Cross at this weekend’s Women’s Soccer Championship. At halftime of Sunday’s match, administrators from the league and UConn will collect donations on behalf of the American Red Cross to help families affected by Hurricane Sandy. 100% of the proceeds will go to the Connecticut Chapter of the Red Cross.
