Dowling women win ECC crown again, advance to Division II tournament

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Lindsey Thompson scored the lone goal in the 73rd minute as the Dowling College women secured their second consecutive East Coast Conference title with a 1-0 victory over the University of Bridgeport on Sunday.

The Golden Lions (13-3-2) earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament.

Thompson fired a sot off the left post and into the net.

The Golden Lions were out shot, 11-9, but goalkeeper and tournament Most Outstanding Player Melissa Guglielmo came up with eight saves. Bridgeport keeper Julia Hansson made five saves.

Both teams played a faily even first half.

The Purple Knights looked as though they were going to break the ice when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 67th minute. Danielle Puddefoot took the shot, but Guglielmo saved the shot and covered up the rebound.

Bridgeport continued to put pressure on the Dowling defense and Guglielmo with three shots in the final 10 minutes, but the Golden Lions held strong for their 10th shutout.
