Brooklyn College's Hensford is honored

Brooklyn College coach Rawle Hensford has been named the City University of New York Athletic Conference men's soccer coach of the year.

Six BC players also were named first-team all-stars.

Hensford, in his fourth season at the BC helm, enjoyed his best season, guiding the Bulldogs to an 13-5-2 record and a 5-1-2 mark in the CUNYAC to secure the No. 2 seed in the 2012 CUNYAC tournament. BC also was selected into the Eastern College Athletic Confernece Division III Metro tournament as the sixth seed.

“I am very honored and thankful that my fellow coaches found me worthy of such an award,” Hensford said. “This award is not mine alone, as I see this as a testimony to the hard work of my student-athletes and my assistant coach Roger Sandy.”

Brooklyn also accounted for six of the 11 first-team selections as goalkeeper Stamatis Boundouris, defenders Peter Vavalle and Denton Laing, midfielders Alwyn Adams and Dmitry Prokofyev and forward Pajtim Gjonbalaj were honored.

Boundouris has had a stellar season, appearing in 18 of 20 games, while posting a 1.14 goals-against-average and a .792 save percentage. Playing more than 1,578 minutes, Boundouris surrendered 20 goals, while recording 76 saves. He also recorded six shutouts and an 11-5-2 mark.

Aiding Boundouris were Vavalle and Laing, who anchored a solid defense that recorded 10 shutouts. Vavalle started in all 16 games he has appeared, totaling two goals and three assists. Laing has played in all 20 games and has made 19 starts, to go along with two goals.

In their first seasons with BC, Adams recorded eight goals and five assists AND Prokofyev added eight goals and four assists. Adams registered three game-winning goals, while Prokofyev had two.

Gjonbalaj enjoyed a career year, tallying a team-high 10 goals, to go along with six assists. He also has recorded three game-winning goals..
