HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Seniors Brittany Butts and Laura Greene combined on a goal 17 minutes into the second half to snap a 1-1 tie and propel the Pride to a 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Old Dominion in Hofstra’s final home match of the regular season on Senior Day on Sunday.
The Pride had tied the game 32 seconds into the second half.
The win snapped a four-match losing streak, the team's longest since 1993, and evened the Pride’s record at 7-7 overall and 3-5 in the CAA. Old Dominion fell to 6-8-2 overall and 3-4-1 in league.
The Monarchs took a 1-0 lead in the first half as Victoria Johnson slid a short cross to Lisa Bernadini, who buried a shot from the doorstep past goalkeeper Emily Morphitis at 31:15. ODU held the lead into halftime despite being outshot, 10-3 in the first half.
The Pride wasted no time in pressuring the Monarchs in the second half. Caylin Dudley took a shot on the opening kickof from midfield to take advantage of a bright sun that shined in the direction of Monarch keeper Brianna Alvarado. But Alvarado was up to the task on that shot. But 30 seconds later, following an ODU turnover, freshman Sam Scolarici raced in from the right side and lined a low shot inside the far post to tie the score at 45:32.
Then it was up to a pair of veterans, playing in their final home match, in Butts and Greene to put Hofstra ahead. Butts threaded a nice through ball to Greene, who raced in ahead of her defender and beat Alvarado to put the Pride ahead at 62:01. The goal was Greene’s team and league-high 13th.
The Pride outshot Old Dominion, 14-5, in the second half and 24-8 in the match.
Morphitis made four saves, while Alvarado was called on to make 10 saves.
Hofstra will play the last three matches of the regular season away from home starting with Georgia State on Friday.
