A SENIOR MOMENT
Mashriqi's goal gives LIU men 1-0 OT win
Brooklyn, N.Y. -- Senior Mohammed Mashriqi took a pass from junior Frank Alesci and buried a game-winning goal from 22 yards in extratime to beat Central Connecticut State, 2-1, in a Northeast Conference at LIU Field Sunday.
The goal broke a 56 minute scoring drought and improved the Blackbirds’ record to 6-5 (1-1 NEC) on the season.
Mashriqi has his hand in LIU’s first goal as he played a long ball to senior Jukka Lehto, who scored in the 33rd minute.
The Blue Devils equalized in the 41st minute when goalkeeper Adam Janssen couldn’t handle a shot from Yan Klukowski inside the 18-yard box.
CCSU’s Robert Cavener was sent off in the 58th minute after receiving a red card, giving the Blackbirds a man advantage the rest of the way.
Janssen recorded a career-high seven saves. The Blackbirds outshot the Blue Devils, 18-8, and held a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Mashriqi’s goal and assist earned him the Colin Fowles MVP Trophy. The trophy is named after the former LIU player who died at 32 from random gunfire while playing recreational soccer..
LIU (1-1-0 conference, 6-5 overall) travels to Robert Morris in Moon Township, Pa. Friday.
