Senior Kim Bishop and junior Kelly Carter of the Long Island University women’s soccer team were named second team All-Northeast Conference.
Bishop (Valley Stream, N.Y.) enjoyed a career year in her final campaign with the Blackbirds. The midfielder started all 17 games and tied for the team lead with three goals. Thorse goals were game-winning goals, including an important tally in a 1-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson to spark a three-game winning streak that helped propel LIU into the postseason. She also scored a game-winner at Mount St. Mary’s and a double-extratime score in a 1-0 win over Buffalo on the opening weekend.
Carter helped anchor a defense that posted eight shutouts. The only returning starter on the backline entering the season, Carter started all 17 game and helped LIU post a 0.63 goals against average. She also collected an assist, setting up the game-winner against Fairleigh Dickinson. Carter has started all 57 games of her career.
LIU (5-4-1 NEC, 9-7-1 overall) opens play in the NEC tournament on Friday against top-seeded Central Connecticut State (9-0-1, 11-6-2) at 11 a.m. on CCSU Soccer Field. The winner will advance to the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
