COLLEGE BOOT SPOTLIGHT
Meet LIU's Bannon and vote
LIU junior goalkeeper Jennifer Bannon (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich HS) was named NEC Goalkeeper of the Year for 2011 after posting a 1.07 regular-season goals-against average and 65 saves en route to four shutout performances. She is one of six nominees for Big Apple Soccer women’s college player of the year, and a regional nominee for the Soccer News Net Women’s College Boot, recognizing the national player of the year.
Bannon was named adidas/NEC Defender of the Week four times, with her most impressive effort coming against Ivy League opponent Harvard, when she made a season-high 10 saves to preserve a 2-1 LIU victory. Bannon also led LIU to a seven-game winning streak to end the regular season. During this stretch the East Greenwich, R.I., native surrendered just one goal in three games and helped the Blackbirds post shutouts in the remaining four. She collected six more saves to backstop the Blackbirds to their third NEC tournament title and an automatic berth in the Women’s NCAA tournament.
Fan voting for the Soccer News Net College Boot and Big Apple Soccer college player of the year awards is open through December 23.
