Rutgers Filigno picked for Olympics
OTTAWA, Ontario---Rutgers redshirt junior Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, ON, Canada) has been selected to Team Canada’s 18-player roster for the London 2012 Olympics, Canadian head coach John Herdman announced Monday.
This marks Filigno’s second trip to the Women's Olympic Football Tournament. Filigno and Canada will be one of 12 teams focused on a podium result, with the competition split into three groups of four teams for pool play.
The rising junior has 42 caps overall. In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Filigno and Canada reached the quarterfinal phase of competition, falling in extra time to eventual champion USA.
Canada will then take on Japan (July 25) in Coventry, followed by South Africa (July 28) and Sweden (July 31) in Newcastle. Both Japan (champion) and Sweden (bronze) were medal winners at the most recent FIFA Women's World Cup.
Either two or three teams will advance from each group, with eight teams participating in the quarterfinal phase. The quarterfinal matches are on August 3, the semifinal matches are on August 6, and the final medal matches are on August 9.
