November 11, 2009 ON A ROLL St. John's BE foe gets national recognition
Providence College junior Matt Marcin was named National Soccer Coaches Association of America player of the week Wednesday.
It marked the first time in the four-year history of the award that a school has had a player chosen for two consecutive weeks as Tim Ritter earned the honor last week.
Marcin led Providence to a pair of wins in the Big East tournament last week. On Wednesday, Nov. 4, Marcin scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute as the Friars defeated Villanova, 2-1, in first-round action. Marcin’s goal completed the comeback for the Friars, who trailed, 1-0, at halftime. On Saturday, Nov. 7, he scored the lone goal of the match in extratime to lead fifth-seeded Providence to a 1-0 victory at No. 8 and top-seed Connecticut in the quarterfinals.
Marcin leads the Friars in scoring with a career-high five goals and also has two assists.
The Friars (10-6-3), who have won five consecutive games for the first time since 1984, will make their seventh appearance in the Big East semifinals on Friday at 3 p.m. against No. 24 St. John’s in Morgantown, W.Va. The semifinals will air live on CBS College Sports. The conference final is Sunday.
