ANOTHER GAME-WINNER
Fernandes lifts Stony Brook men over Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Senior Leonardo Fernandes scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute to lead the Stony Brook men to a 2-1 victory over Hartford at Al-Marzook Field ON saturday night.

Senior Raphael Abreu (New York, N.Y.) also scored for the Seawolves, who moved to 9-3-1 overall and 3-1-0 in America East. Stony Brook is one point point Vermont in America East.

"I thought it was a good win on the road, and a good performance by our guys," Stony Brook coach Ryan Anatol said. "I thought we responded well to giving up the goal in the second half and did well to score again and get the result we were looking for."

In the 25th minute, Abreu received a ball played into him, moved towards goalkeeper Viltsu Tuumi and took a point blank shot at him that Tuumi saved but could not control. The ball popped out to a Hartford defender, but Abreu anticipated the play and stole it from him and then swatted the ball into the goal, far side.

In the 63rd minute, Hartford's Anthony Santaga converted a cross from Rohan Roye by heading it in well over senior goalkeeper Stefan Manz (Bronx, N.Y.).

In the 73rd minute, senior Kyle Schlesinger (Selden, N.Y.) broke up a Hartford attack and played the ball into the midfield. Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) then got a hold of the ball on a pass from senior Berian Gobeil Cruz (Montreal, Quebec), took on a pair of defenders, pushed the ball to his left foot and blasted a shot into the net high over Tuumi's head from about 25 yards.

Fernandes recorded his fifth-game winning goal of the season and 12th of his career. He has 30 goals and 75 points in his career.

Stony Brook outshot Hartford 14-11 overall and 8-2 on shots on goal. The Seawolves held Hartford without a shot on goal until the 62nd minute.

Stony Brook will return home for two matches, beginning Friday night vs. the University of Maryland-Baltimore County at LaValle Stadium at 7 p.m.
