Maldini rumor is just that -- a rumor

I guess this is the time of the season when everyone is either trying out or signing with the Red Bulls, especially since there is a new coach and sporting director in charge.

The latest rumor coming out of Europe was that former A.C. Milan and Italian international defender Paolo Maldini either was negotiating or wanted to sign with the Red Bulls.

That's what a couple of Italian websites said.

Well, I checked around and according to one well-placed MLS source, that was not happening.

End of rumor, end of story.

I am not going to detail the problems of adding a 41-year-old defender who had seen his better days years ago to a roster that needs to be younger.

Next rumor, please.
