COSMOS TIE CHINA
Chinaglia scores in 1-1 draw
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ---The New York Cosmos and the People’s Republic of China traded rapid-fire goals before settling for a 1-1 draw Saturday before a Giants Stadium crowd of 33,712.
Giorgio Chinaglia put the Cosmos on the board 7:38 into the second half. Nelsi Morais brought the ball down the left wing and set up the play with a centering pass.
The Chinese equalized less than five minutes later, when Shen Hsiang-fu drilled a shot into the right corner of the net.
Erol Yasin got the start in goal for the Cosmos, but had to be subbed out with a knee injury a few minutes before halftime. Shep Messing finished the game, and surrendered the equalizing goal.
This was the third meeting between the two teams in less than a month. The teams played to another 1-1 tie in their first meeting, in Peking, and the Cosmos won the second game 2-1 in Beijing.
The exhibition was part of a five-team tour the Chinese are making in the United States. They will also play the U.S. National Team and the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
The Cosmos depart Oct. 10 for a game against Flamengo in Brazil, their last of an 11- game postseason that included stops in the Caribbean and Asia. A tour of Europe was cancelled.
“The boys need a rest,” said Cosmos coach Eddie Firmani.
