WORLD FOOTBALL CHALLENGE ManU slips past Barcelona 2-1
LANDOVER, Md.---Nani and Michael Owen each scored as Manchester United won the fifth straight game of their North American tour, 2-1 over FC Barcelona.
The highly anticipated rematch of last year’s Champions League final won by Barcelona drew a Washington-area soccer record crowd of 81,807 to FedEx Field Saturday night.
Nani raced onto a ball from Danny Wellbeck in the 22nd minute, beating the Barcelona defense before slotting a ball into the far side netting.
Thiago equalized in the 70th minute with a brilliant strike to the lower right side netting from the top of the penalty arc.
Owen gave United the win in the 76th minute, breaking away after a steal at midfield by Tom Cleverley and touching the ball over Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdez.
Manchester United concludes their North American Tour, while Barcelona is just starting theirs and will play on Wednesday in Miami and next Saturday in Dallas.
