Revs deal Joseph to Chivas

Former St. John's University standout midfielder Shalrie Joseph, who had played his entire professional soccer career with the New England Revolution, will now call Chivas USA home.

The Revs traded Joseph, their team captain and a Designated Player, to the west coast club on Wednesday for Blair Gavin, a second-round pick in the 2013 Major League Soccer SuperDraft and undisclosed allocation money.

As per team and league policy, no other details of the deal were not revealed.

Joseph was stunned by the trade.

"1 of the saddest days of my life, I believed n trusted that I would retire a Rev. It's a tough business but am looking forward to the future," he said on twitter.

He later added: "Thank u all of NE for ur support since the beginning.. NE will always be my home and in my heart.

"4 all my fans and young players I inspire take nothing for granted. Use everything for motivation, make urself better everyday in every way."

New England, however, had other ideas.


“We are very glad to bring Shalrie Joseph to the organization,” Chivas USA general manager Jose Domene said in a statement. “He has been one the most consistent players in this League. He brings his experience and he will help us make that final push for the playoffs and hopefully MLS Cup.”

The 34-year-old Joseph is a native of Saint George, Grenada, but grew up in Brooklyn as a teen. He joined New England after being chosen in the second round of the 2002 SuperDraft after finishing a stellar career at St John’s. Joseph has played in 18 matches forthe Revs this season (15 starts, one goal and three assists) and has scored 37 career goals and recorded 34 assists.

“Trading Shalrie was a not a decision we made easily,” Revs general manager Michael Burns said. “Shalrie has been one of the faces of the club for a decade, but we had to take a hard look at our roster and decide where we needed to be as we look toward the future. Shalrie has accomplished so much as a member of the Revs, and we wish him nothing but best wishes as he moves on to the next stage in his career with Chivas USA.

“With this trade, we gain a significant amount of roster flexibility and add a player in Blair Gavin who has great potential, an additional draft pick next year, plus allocation money – all of which provides us options to improve the team,”

In 2009 Joseph was named one of three finalists for MLS Most Valuable Player, as he recorded eight goals and eight assists that year.

A long-time member of the Grenada National Team, Joseph also was named the 2007 Caribbean player of the year.
