SOCCER NIGHT IN NEWTOWN
Report: Houston Dynamo to hold special benefit on Jan. 7
The Houston Dynamo will head to Newtown, Conn. to hold a Soccer Night in Newtown, Conn. on Jan. 7 to bring some cheer and smiles to the New England town that suffered so much grief and so many losses last week.
Dynamo club president Chris Canetti told FOX 26 Sports in Houston that he plans to head to Newtown along with Brad Davis, Brian Ching, Ricardo Clark, Corey Ashe and Tally Hall,
"These five guys have volunteered their time to join me to go up there to try to help out a community that's hurting right now," Canetti told the TV station.
Twenty-six people died in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday, Dec. 14, which included 20 school children and six adults.
Canetti told FOX26 Sports that the Dynamo holds a similar event in Houston "where we bring a lot of our resources out to the community and have a little bit of fun with our players. We've kind of duplicated the idea in a smaller fashion several thousand miles of way."
Canetti, who is from Connecticut, graduated from Quinnipiac University.
"I think we all try to find ways to help and lend a hand," Canetti was quoted by Fox 26. "We've figured out a small way to help this community which happens to be a very, very rich youth soccer community.
"It'll be fan-festival type of event, taking photos, signing autographs. The idea is to give kids a chance to come out, have some fun, have some memories and take a diversion from the difficult realities that they're facing right now."
The Dynamo franchise also has created a charitable auction as proceeds will go to the United Way Sandy Hook fund, Canetti added.
