September 12, 2012 WINTER SHOWCASE Massapequa SC event continues to grow
Long Island in December continues to be a popular destination for elite soccer teams, as the Massapequa Soccer Club's Annual Winter College Showcase continues to grow.
This year, the sixth annual event will be held over two weekends with boys U-15 to U-18 taking the field on December 1-2 and girls taking to the pitch the following weekend, December 8-9. The fee for the showcase is $800. Additionally, there will be a Boys U14 and Girls U14 Top Flight bracket separate from showcase at this year's event. The fee for this is $700.00 .
Since the tournament first started in 2007, the event has grown tremendously. The first field accommodated 32 teams in each bracket, tournament Director Rich Guinness said last year the tournament featured 150 boys teams and 100 girls teams.
The tournament uses 8 different venues on Long Island, including Massapequa Field of Dreams, Brentwood State Park, Triangle Park, Robbins Lane, Syosset Woodbury Park and Allen Park. All of the matches are played on turf fields, with each team guaranteed a minimum of three games.
Because of the quality of play at the event, numerous college coaches attend looking to scout out talent and teams from all over the northeast travel to Long Island to participate. Among the clubs already confirmed are from Virginia FC Barca, from Pennsylvania Lower Merion, from Massachusetts Crusaders United and FC Blazers and from Vermont Synergy FC from New Hampshire Seacoast United, Several top clubs from New Jersey and Connecticut as well as upstate New York are also making the trip to the Island, including Alleycats FC Albany, Guilderland FC Albany, Blackwatch Premier Albany, Match Fit FC and NJ Crush and Soccer Plus and Oakwood SC.
