January 16, 2010 TWO DOWN, TWO TO GO Gina DiMartino selected by Breakers
PHILADELPHIA -- A second DiMartino sister is poised to play in Women's Professional Soccer.
Boston College forward Gina DiMartino won't have to look far for an apartment for her new team as she was selected by the Boston Breakers in the sixth round of the Women's Professional Soccer draft Friday afternoon.
Gina joined older sister Christina (Tina) DiMartino in the league. Christina was drafted and played last season with the FC Gold Pride before she was dealt to the Los Angeles Sol. She played her college ball at UCLA.
They have two younger sisters -- Vicki DiMartino, who recently completed her freshman season at BC -- and Rosie DiMartino, who was invited to U.S. Girls Under-14 National Team late last year.
Gina DiMartino, a native of Massapequa Park, N.Y., enjoyed had an outstanding season at midfield. A second team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, DiMartino finished the season with eight goals, six assists for 22 points. She was also a National Soccer Coaches Association of America Regional All-American second team selection.
She played in 84 career games over four seasons and finished her career with 71 points (25 goals, 21 assists) good enough for seventh on the all-time scoring list. DiMartino was the ACC Freshman of the Year. She will earn a degree from Boston College in May, 2010.
The Breakers acquired the Sol's sixth round selection (56th overall) for future considerations. With that pick in the sixth round, the Breakers chose DiMartino, a forward from Boston College. In the seventh round (61st overall), the Breakers chose Casey Brown from Boston University. The 5-7 defender became the first player in conference history to earn the America East defender of the year award in three consecutive seasons.
“There has always been a BU-BC rivalry but I have respect for the BC organization and respect for Gina,” Brown said. "I’m excited we are now playing on the same side. As a kid from Natick, Mass. I’m ecstatic. I’m excited to have my friends and family be able to watch [me] play in Boston.”
