Savarese happy for his ex-teammate Petke

By Michael Lewis Editor

He played but one season together with Mike Petke when both players were on the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in 1998, but New York Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese wished the new Red Bulls head coach well.

"I think it's great having a U.S. coach, a New Yorker, somebody that has been here for a long time, somebody was has played for the organization and was liked by the fans," Savarese said earlier this week. "I think it's great. I think we should see it more often. I think the Red Bulls made a good decision."

Asked if he had any advice for Petke, Savarese replied: "I'm pretty sure he's getting good advice from many, many areas. What I can say, from a friend, from some body . . . I just wish him the best. I hope he does very, very well and proves he was a good selection."

Savarese and Petke played on the 1998 New York/New Jersey MetroStars, Petke's rookie season in Major League Soccer, Savarese's last season with the club before he was traded to the New England Revolution prior to the 1999 season.

No plans -- for now

At the present time, the Cosmos and the Red Bulls have not plans to play in an exhibition game this year. Of course, that could change because the year is young.

"They're a New York team, we're a New York team," Savarese said. "There might be something there in the future. but there is nothing that I know."

Practice facility?

The Cosmos have found a tentative location for a practice facility in Nassau County, but they cannot reveal its location.

"We haven't signed anything and we don't have anything confirmed," Savarese said.
