NEW YORK - Slowly, but sure the New York Cosmos continue to build their team.

The North American Soccer League team on Friday announced acquisition of Spanish midfielder Ayoze as the team’s fourth signing.

the 27-year-old Ayoze is a left-sided midfielder who most recently performed with Sporting Gijon since 2010.

"“Ayoze is a very talented player that has great experience in the top two divisions in Spain,”" Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese said in a statement. "“That experience should prove invaluable to our team this season. He also has the versatility to play anywhere on the left side. Combined with the energy he brings to the pitch every game, I think our fans are in for a real treat when he suits up in Cosmos colors.”"

A native of the Canary Islands, Ayoze debuted for his hometown club, CD Tenerife, in 2004. After a spell on loan at Las Palmas in the Spanish Third Division during the 2004-2005 season, Ayoze returned to Tenerife, where he was a fixture until 2010. In the 2008-2009 season, Ayoze made 30 appearances and helped his club achieve promotion to Spain’'s top flight, La Liga. The following season, he made 25 appearances in La Liga and scored two goals.

After Tenerife suffered relegation in May 2010, Ayoze signed with Sporting Gijon. During the 2010-2011 season, he helped Sporting maintain its La Liga status, making 13 appearances and scoring a goal. In the 2011/2012 Primera División season, Ayoze played 15 times for Gijon.

The Cosmos also have signed former Red Bulls and Columbus Crew midfielder Carlos Mendes, ex-Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Kyle Reynish and forward Stefan Dimitrov.

The Cosmos will open their NASL season for the league's fall season in August. They will play at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.
