The Brooklyn Italians' 7-2 victory over NY Athletic Club was considered a hollow victory by the players, coaches, and fans. Before the National Premier Soccer League season, 10 wins, one loss and one tie appeared the most likely and plausible path to advancing to the North East playoffs. However, the Red Bulls Under-23 team had an identical record, and Brooklyn had to overcome an insurmountable goal difference in its final game to have a chance at the Final Four in Alabama.
