2 teams combine to become N.Y. Magic-FA Euro
BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The merger of two New York City soccer clubs officially was announced to form the N.Y. Magic--FA Euro on Saturday.
The combined club will have several teams playing at various levels in the United Soccer Leagues. That includes in the W-League, Premier Development League, a boys team in the Super 20 League and boys and girls teams in the Super Y League.
“This merger is a major step forward for soccer in the New York metropolitan area, providing more opportunities for young players and coaches to compete at a higher level and learn what it takes to be successful in college and the pro leagues,” said Joe Balsamo, founder of FA Euro.
The N.Y. Magic-FA Euro is New York City's only PDL team.
"We want to change the way players in this country develop," Marco Balsamo, FA Euro executive director said on twitter.
The announcement was made at the New Utrecht High School Auditorium before an audience of professional, amateur and collegiate players, team and league sponsors and members of the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association.
"We are partnering for a powerful and positive opportunity for New York youth to excel in the game," the Magic's twitter account quoted co-owner and vice president Lyndelle T. Phillips as saying at the press conference.
"It's one thing to play in your own backyard, but another to play with competition nationwide."
The NY Magic-FA Euro team will hold tryouts for its PDL team at the Verrazano Soccer Complex on Feb. 16-17 from 2-5 p.m.
The executives of the new, merged team:
* Balsamo – co-owner and president; head coach of the PDL team
* Phillips – co-owner and vice president
* Nino DePasquali –co-owner and head coach of the W-League team
* Marco Balsamo – director, responsible for day-to-day club operations and media
* Benjamin Marcu – director, responsible for maintaining continuity between the youth and senior soccer programs within the club
* Adam Marcu – director, responsible for youth operations
The Magic soccer club began in the early 1980s as a local club team competing in the New York Metropolitan Women’s Soccer League. In 1997, the Magic, coached by DePasquali and managed by Phillips, joined the USL’s W-League, affiliating with the former USL A-League men’s team, the New York Fever.
In 1998, when the Fever ended operations, Phillips and DePasquali acquired the franchise rights to the W-League team, and renamed it New York Magic. The Magic has excelled in the W-League – qualifying for the national championship Final Four three times and winning the league title once – and at the youth level in the Super Y-League. The team has focused on encouraging, supporting and developing competitive soccer for women and youth in the metropolitan area.
FA Euro was founded by the Balsamos in 2011 to provide a new type of youth soccer experience to young players in the New York area. The club provides underprivileged young people with the opportunity to play soccer at a high level, learn teamwork and commitment while maximizing the chance of going to college on a sports scholarship, and perhaps playing professionally in Europe. Since the club’s inception, it was the Balsamos' goal to bring the PDL to FA Euro and to give the Club’s young players contact with the highest level of play possible.
