ALEXANDER THE GREAT AND VERSATILE
Midfielder shifts to the left and shifts the Red Bulls into high gear and to a win

Eric Alexander is a central midfielder by nature and a right midfielder by necessity. On Wednesday night, Alexander, the great team player, reminded the soccer world how versatile he really is. He started the game at left midfield and he wound up celebrating his 26th birthday two days later in the best possible way, playing a strong game and helping set up both Red Bulls' goals in their 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union.

THE SHORT CORNER
What we liked and didn't like

The Red Bulls won on Wednesday night (finally!) in a match that wasn't always pretty but got the end result. Now with that first win under their belt, New York heads into a weekend without soccer to get ready for the Houston Dynamo next Wednesday night.

THANKS, THEY NEEDED THAT
Red Bulls secure 1st win of the season

Finally, a win from New York, which got into the 'W' column on Wednesday night in a 2-1 home result over derby rival Philadelphia Union. That the Red Bulls needed this result is a bit of an understatement, even if they won't admit to it.

THE FIRST ONE
Henry, Sam score as Red Bulls edge Union

One thing is certain for the Red Bulls this season. They won't tie the LA Galaxy for futility by a defending Supporters Shield champion. In 2003, the Galaxy endured an eight-game winless streak at the start of the MLS season after winning the regular-season crown the prior season. Thanks to goals by Thierry Henry and Lloyd Sam and some playmaking by Eric Alexander, the Red Bulls snapped their season-opening skid at six games with a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union before 14,768 at Red Bull Arena Wednesday night.

A TALE OF TWO EXTREMES
Red Bulls will try to start, finish better

It's not necessarily how you start, but how you finish, they say. Well, the Red Bulls are having problems with two aspects of the game.

WARY EYE
Hackworth: Red Bulls 'a little bit scary' because they're going to be motivated and hungry for 1st win

As his Philadelphia Union put its final preparations for its encounter at Red Bull Arena on Wednesday night, head coach John Hackworth admitted he was more than a bit wary of the Red Bulls.

DOING THE DIRTY WORK
Wright-Phillips might have only one goal, but he helps Red Bulls attack in other ways

Bradley Wright-Phillips, where are you? After scoring in the season opener as a second-half substitute, Wright-Phillips has gone quiet with just one start in the last four games. Since being signed late last year, the English forward has just two goals in 12 games. He came on in the second half of Saturday's 1-0 loss at D.C. United but he could be poised for bigger things Wednesday against Philadelphia.

READY FOR A REBOOT
Red Bulls aim for 1st win of season

The winless Red Bulls understand the gravity of the situation ahead of them on Wednesday night against the Phiadelphia Union. In fact, they see it as a chance to officially start their season.

April 15, 2014
THEY'RE FIT
Cahill, Armando ready to play vs. Philly

Tim Cahill and Armando are fit and in for Wednesday night against the Philadelphia Union. All that is left is for the Red Bulls try to figure out what the best role is for each player.

After being held back by the Red Bulls so that he could be part of their gameday roster for this past weekend, Matt Miazga has been released by the club to the join the U.S. Under-20 national team for the Dallas Cup.

WHY DE BONTIN LEFT
'We no longer agreed to the strategy'

Speaking for the first time since he left the Red Bulls as general manager last month, Jerome de Bontin says he decided to leave due to strategic differences between him and the team hierarchy in Austria.

IT'S NOT DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN
Petke: This season is not like 2011

After a 1-0 loss at D.C. United, it is clear that last year's Supporters Shield winning side is in a funk and in need of a victory. But head coach Mike Petke doesn't see a side in panic and he doesn't see parallels to a Red Bulls side from three years ago that underwhelmed despite high expectations.

STILL HAMSTRUNG
Hamstring injury likely to keep Convey sidelined again

A hamstring injury late last week shelved midfielder Bobby Convey for Saturday's loss at D.C. United. It will likely keep him out this week for Wednesday's rivalry against Philadelphia.

'THEY'RE KNOCKING ON THE DOOR'
Petke pleased with Cahill's Armando's progress

In a rare bit of recent good news for the Red Bulls, Tim Cahill returned to the practice field on Monday after missing the last two games with a hamstring injury. He was joined by central defender Armando as both players make a bid for inclusion in the gameday roster Wednesday night against the Union.
