The New York Red Bulls have signed speedy Matthew Mbuta, a 22-year-old Cameroonian winger to a developmental contract, according to league sources.
To make room for Mbuta, who scored seven goals in 33 appearances for Crystal Palace Baltimore of the United Soccer Leagues Second Division over two seasons, the Red Bulls have released forward Chris Megaloudis, according to sources.
An official announcement is expected on Tuesday.
Megaloudis, a 24-year-old Queens, N.Y. native who played at Stony Brook University, appeared in one game this season – coming off the bench to play 35 minutes in a 1-1 draw at New England June 18. Megaloudis, who scored two goals in six appearances for the Puerto Rican National Team, scored one goal in six games with the Red Bulls reserves.
Mbuta, who has been on trial with the Red Bulls, has been impressive in two reserve league games, picking up four assists. The Cameroon Under-23 National Team player has also played for PWD de Barnenda of the Cameroon Premiere Division and Duli Pengiran Muda Mahkota FC in the Malaysian Super League and has also had loan spells with West Ham United and Arsenal of the English Premier League.
