Are the Red Bulls close to signing another European player?

According to the German website IVZ-Online.com and the Frankfurter Allgemeine, Macedonian international and Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Oka Nikolov has turned down a contract extension from Eintracht Frankfurt and intends to sign with the Red Bulls. American Soccer News posted the report Wednesday morning.

IVZOnline said that the 35-year-old Nikolov intends to join the Red Bulls when his contract expires July 1.

Unless Nikolov gets a free transfer, he will not be able to sign with the Red Bulls until the summer transfer window.

“Mr. Nikolov has informed us that he will not accept the offer to extend his contract by two years and that he wants to go to the U.S.,” Eintracht executive chairman Heribert Bruchhagen was quoted by IVZ-Online.

The report described Nikolov's contract offer from the Red Bulls as lucrative.

Eintracht had offered Nikolov a two-year deal, club boss Heribert Bruchhagen told Deutschen Presse-Agentur, a German press agency in a story that was reported in the Frankfurter Allgemeine.

"Our offer still stands," Eintracht boss However Bruchhagen told Deutschen Presse-Agentur, a German press agency. If Oka liked to change into the United States, he must come to us, in order to dissolve its contract. "

Last week Red Bulls sporting director and general manager Erik Soler downplayed reports saying that the MLS club is in negotiations with Nikolov.

"Of course I know him very well," Soler said last Wednesday. "We have not spoken to anybody about him."

Nikolov has played in more than 300 games for the German Bundesliga team and has played five times for Macedonia.

The Red Bulls have two returning goalkeepers from last season -- Danny Cepero and Bouna Coundoul.

The Red Bulls could not be reached for comment.
