March 6, 2010 ON TRIAL? Report: Toronto releases Robinson, who will train with the Red Bulls
Is veteran Welsh midfielder Carl Robinson heading for the Red Bulls?
According to CBCSports.ca, the 33-year-old Robinson has been released by Toronto FC and will go on trial with the Red Bulls.
Toronto would have to pay some of Robinson's salary if he signs with the Red Bulls, who would have to trade draft choices to the Canadian club, according to CBSSports. Robinson was one of the team's most popular players.
The signing of Canadian Julian de Guzman made Robinson a bit expendable as both players playing holding midfielder. Also, Robinson's base salary last season was $300,000, a huge salary for a defensive midfielder on a non-playoff team.
Guzman is best known to Red Bulls fans for kicking Juan Pablo Angel in the team's 4-0 trouncing of Toronto last Saturday. Angel, who had a hat-trick suffered a lower right leg strain.
