Red Bulls veteran striker John Wolyniec hasn't made a decision as to whether he will retire or continue playing somewhere else.
The Red Bulls recently told Wolyniec, one of the most popular players in the MLS club's 15-year history, that he would be released to make room for French international Thierry Henry.
They offered the Staten Island native an opportunity to coach in the organization. The nature of the position has not been established, although sources said it probably would be with the Red Bull Academy youth teams.
The 33-year-old Wolyniec has been exploring what avenues might be open to him as a player.
"I'm sad it has come to an end," he said Monday.
While he hasn't made up his mind, it would not be surprising if Wolyniec took the Red Bulls up on their offer, given his comments.
If he did become a Red Bulls coach, Woly said he would look "forward to working with the club in whatever capacity it might be."
Wolyniec, who has scored some of the most important goals in the team's history, is fifth on the Red Bulls' career scoring list (36 goals) and second in games played (167).
"The club has been good to me," he said. "I've been grateful to the opportunity they have given me."
Wolyniec understood that he was a victim of the team's desire to upgrade itself.
"The club is headed in the right direction doing some big things," he said. "They're aggressive and want to improve and do the right things."
