UPPER MONTCLAIR, N.J. -- Red Bulls coach Hans Backe says that beleagured Mexican defender-midfielder Rafa Marquez is ready to bounce back after enduring a rather sub-par campaign in 2011.

"As we did with all players after the season," Backe told reporters at Montclair State University on Thursday. "We had individual talks with all players after the season.

"We had good chats with him about the future. I know he’s very, very keen to have a good season in 2012."

Asked about reports that teams from Brazil and Argentina were interested in the Mexican National Team captain or that there were approaches for Marquez, Backe replied, "No."

Backe added that Marquez will start the season as a midfielder. He had major problems playing in the back, looking lackadasical on many places.

"We will definitely play him in the beginning as a midfielder," said Backe, who added that he still could use Marquez on the backline.

Marquez played at midfield after he joined the club in the 2010 before switching to center back last season.

"There’s no problem to play both," he said.

Of course, that's after Marquez serves the final two games of his three-match suspension for throwing the ball at LA Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan and starting a fracas after the Red Bulls 1-0 home loss in the MLS playoffs last year.
