FINISHING ON A LOSING NOTE
Red Bulls blanked in pre-season finale by Real Salt Lake, 1-0
TUCSON, Ariz. -- If the Major League Soccer pre-season is any indication of what is to come for the Red Bulls in 2012, then the Red Bulls could be in for a long year.

The Red Bulls dropped their final pre-season match to Real Salt Lake, 1-0, in the third-place match of the Desert Diamond Cup on Saturday. The defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy and New England Revolution met for the championship in the second game of the
The Red Bulls finished the tournament in last place at 1-3, losing to RSL twice, and 2-3-3 overall. Fortunately for the Red Bulls, the pre-season doesn't count as they kick off their 17th season at FC Dallas a week from Sunday.
Former St. John's standout and left fullback Chris Wingert gave RSL all the scoring it needed, connecting for the lone goal of the match in the 28th minute. Wingert sent a 25-yard curling shot into the upper right corner past goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo.
Four minutes later, Red Bulls striker Kenny Cooper tried a long-range effort of his own that was saved by goalkeeper Nick Rimando. Thierry Henry was first to the rebound, but was not able to get enough power on his volley and Rimando was able to collect. In the 36th minute, Cooper got behind the Real Salt Lake back four and unleashed a left-footed attempt that Rimando could only parry away. Henry again was the first to the ball and could not keep his first-time hit on frame.
Red Bulls coach Hans Backe made several substitutions, including pulling Jan Gunnar Solli for rookie Connor Lade in the 43rd minute and brining on Rafa Marquez for Dax McCarty and Juan Agudelo for Cooper at halftime.
Paulo Jr., who tallied against the Red Bulls earlier in the tournament, tried testing Vuolo from outside the penalty area, but the keeper blocked his attempt.
Wingert was taken off in the 56th minute after he was hit by Agudelo's knee when the Red Bulls forward took a jaunt down the right flank.
Thanks to a Thierry Henry through ball, Red Bulls left fullback found himself rushing in on the net in the 86th minute, but his attempt went just wide right. The Costa Rican defender was put through on goal by Henry and went one-on-one against Rimando. Miller elected to chip the keeper and the ball drifted wide of the net. With two minutes left in the match, Miller again went wide, as he tried to re-direct in a Lindpere shot from outside the box.
