UPPER MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Just because the Red Bulls recently signed Brazilian center back Digăo doesn’t mean that Nicki Paterson won’t be a part of their plans for the future.

Paterson was brought in for a trial the same time as Digăo, the brother of Brazilian star Kaka who signed with the team this week. A midfielder on the Charleston Battery, Paterson showed well over the past week and could be a part of the roster next season.

“We said with Nicki that if no team picks him up today, he will stay with us and train and we can look into him for a month,” head coach Hans Backe told BigAppleSoccer.com.

The roster freeze date is Saturday, meaning that the Red Bulls could well keep Paterson in camp to watch him train, eyeing him for a potential signing next year.

Paterson is a central midfielder with a wealth of experience, including a distinguished college career at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and a spell in his native Scotland with a lower division side. With the Battery since 2011, he has twice been named the club’s Offensive MVP.

This past season, Paterson scored 10 goals for the USL side.

“Very mobile central midfielder. Technically very, very good,” Backe said. “A box-to-box player but someone who can find that final pass. But he has an enormous work rate.”
