NEW SPORTING DIRECTOR
Ex-Scotland coach, UEFA technical director Roxburgh named Red Bulls head
The Red Bulls on Friday announced the appointment of former Scotland national coach Andy Roxburgh as their new sporting director.
He will take over the role and responsibilities that former sporting director and general manager Erik Soler had before he was replaced.
Roxburgh will determine whether to keep Hans Backe as coach or replace him.
The Red Bulls were eliminated from the MLS Cup playoffs on Thursday night, losing to D.C. United, 1-0, and dropping the Eastern Conference aggregate goals series, 2-1.
Roxburgh is the former technical director of UEFA. He will be responsible for all soccer activities at the Major League Soccer team.
"I am excited and honored to be given the opportunity by Dietrich Mateschitz to contribute to the development of such an outstanding soccer organization, as the New York Red Bulls," Roxburgh said in a statement. "I'm also delighted to be getting involved in Major League Soccer, which has an impressive reputation as a fast growing and highly competitive league."
Global Sporting Director of Red Bull Soccer, Gerard Houllier was optimistic that Roxburgh was the man for the job.
"I am thrilled to have Andy on board. To have someone of Andy's caliber and experience shows the strength of our commitment to make the New York Red Bulls one of the best franchises in U.S. Soccer," he said in a statement.
