Roxburgh talks to RBNY website about naming a coach, building a team, developing winning mentality

In his first interview since being named sporting director of the Red Bulls, Andy Roxburgh talked to about his goals and priorities.

Roxburgh, former Scotland coach and UEFA technical director, said that he wanted to help make the Red Buls one of the leading soccer clubs in the United States, his priorities with the team and about picking a coach.

Roxburgh reiterated what new general manager Jerome de Bontin said after he was hired several weeks ago.

"We want to make the Red Bulls one of the best franchises in U.S. Soccer," Roxburgh was quoted by the website. "We are looking to build a long-term structure that will ensure that we are competitive season after season. Iíll be taking stock of the current situation in the coming weeks and working with Gerard and the team here to set our priorities for the next season and beyond."

Not surprisingly, naming a coach to succeed hans Backe was the top priority.

Roxburgh told the website that the club was "exploring a number of different options both domestically and internationally on that front in order to find the best candidate. We are also in the process of analyzing the current team roster and seeing how we can improve it before the start of next season.

He did not say what sort of deadline he had of naming a coach.

Roxburgh said he had several long term goals. They were "to develop a winning mentality throughout the club, build a side that will play the game in the right manner, and continue to improve the current youth development structure that will produce the next generation of home-grown talent for the Red Bulls."
