Sources: McAllister favorite to be named Red Bulls coach

By Kristian R. Dyer Contributing Editor

A number of signs are pointing toward Gary McAllister to be named the next Red Bulls coach.

Multiple league sources have told that they expect the Scotsman will be selected as head coach and that he is the clear-cut front runner for the job.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one source said that “an announcement could be coming as early as next week” naming McAllister the next Red Bulls coach. The possible announcement of McAllister comes after weeks of speculation about who would replace Hans Backe.

“I fully expect it to be McAllister,” one source told

Both league sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because they’re not allowed to publicly comment on the matter.

A former Scottish international, McAllister represented his country 55 times and had head coaching stints at Coventry City, Leeds United and Aston Villa.

In early November, the Red Bulls announced the addition of Andy Roxburgh as sporting director, who took over for Erik Soler. He has long been linked as an admirer of McAllister’s managerial style.

Roxburgh is believed to not currently be in the country at this time, according to a source, meaning that he could be hammering out the details on a contract with his new manager.

With a much shorter off-season, the Red Bulls are under pressure to name a new coach as soon as possible. The MLS SuperDraft is scheduled in a month in Indianapolis, Ind. on Jan. 17. Pre-season is expected to start earlier than normal -- perhaps just after the draft because Major League Soccer will kick off its 18th season the first weekend of March.

Earlier this week, learned that Claudio Reyna has spoken with the Red Bulls about a possible role with the club.

These sources could not be corroborated by anyone from within the organization.
