Sunderland is waiting for an answer from Tim Cahill about whether he will join the English Premier League team on loan from the Red Bulls, the Daily Mail reported.

The English newspaper indicated the answer could come as early as Friday.

Red Bulls sporting director Andy Roxburgh would have to give his approve to such a loan.

The 33-year-old Cahill, who joined the Red Bulls as a designated player in July, also has attracted interest from Queens Park Rangers and Aston Villa.

With the winter transfer window opening on Tuesday, Sunderland has been trying to bolster its team, particularly its attack.

Cahill joined the Red Bulls from Everton after playing eight seasons for Everton, where he scored 68 goals in 278 matches.

The Australian international was a headache when he played against Sunderland, scoring seven goals in 14 games against the side.
