INDIANAPOLIS -- The Red Bulls selected Georgetown University midfielder Ian Christianson as the 22nd player of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft at the Indianapolis Convention Center on Thursday.
Christianson, 21, was a National Soccer Coaches Association of America third-team All-America selection.
Red Bulls interim head coach Mike Petke, who headed the Red Bulls draft delegation in the two-round draft, said that the 5-11, 155-lb. Christianson would give the team some much-needed depth behind Dax McCarty at holding midfielder.
“We had a short list of players who we hoped would make it through to us with the 22nd pick and Ian was on that list,” Petke said. “Ian is a player we have seen many times at Georgetown. We also interviewed him and his personality fit what we are looking for at the club. We think that we can help develop Ian into a potential contributor for our team.”
Christianson socred two goals and added two assists this past seaosn.
The Red Bulls acquired the second round selection on Dec. 3 from the Portland Timbers along with defender Kosuke Kimura in exchange for allocation money and the MLS Home Grown rights for defender Bryan Gallego. The Red Bulls did not have its natural first round pick in 2013, as it was a part of a trade with the Timbers on Jan. 12, 2012 that sent forward Kenny Cooper to club.
As it turns out, the Red Bulls are continuing shopping around Cooper to other MLS clubs, despite him scoring a team-best 18 goals last season, according to league sources..
