AP: 'This will be fantastic opportunity for another manager'

Paulo Sousa was thought to be the top candidate for the Red Bulls' head coaching position, but things did not pan out.

On Thursday, former Red Bulls defender Mike Petke was named to lead the team this Major League Soccer season.

Sousa, a former Portuguese international midfielder, had quit his job as Videoton manager in Hungary due to personal reasons earlier this month.

The 42-year-old Sousa did not sound too unhappy about not getting the job.

"We didn't reach a final agreement," Sousa told the Associated Press. "This sometimes happens in football and we need to turn a page and focus on the future."

Petke had been interim coach since Hans Backe's contract was not renewed on Nov. 9.

"This will be a fantastic opportunity for another manager," Sousa told the AP.
