PLENTY OF SMALL STUFF TO SWEAT
Petke learns about tons of details as Red Bulls coach
Mike Petke says the biggest surprise of being a head coach in Major League Soccer is the small stuff and lots and lots of details.
It's not necessarily the decisions on the field, what what happens off of it. It's all about planning, from what to wear at meals, on trips and planning trips for the Red Bulls as well.
"Something that I have been around so long as a player and on the coaching staff the last two years I've always seen but . . . it never hits you until it becomes reality, which is every little decision," Petke said during a media conference call from Bradenton, Fla. on Thursday.
"What are the players wearing for their meals today? Traveling on the plane, what are they going to wear? It might be me sitting down and talking about every flight this year. Are we leaving three days before a west coast trip, one day before a west coast trip? What time do you want to get there? All those little details."
And those little details sometimes takes a lot of time to put together.
"The next thing you know you've had two practices and you've 12 meetings and you still have to plan a session," he said.
But Petke said those things are just part of the job.
"I love it. I'm really enjoying it," he said.
