Petke: Olave sub was planned, we wanted to give Espindola a rest
BRADENTON, Fla. -- Before any Red Bulls fan starts wondering about the team's off-season acquisitions from Real Salt Lake, Jamison Olave and Fabian Espindola, and their lack of playing time in the team's 2-0 pre-season opening win over the Columbus Crew on Friday, they should not worry.

So says head coach Mike Petke, who said decisions on their playing were planned in advance. There were no injury issues.
Olave, a defender, was replaced by Heath Pearce in the 34th minute. Pearce played the rest of the match.
"That was planned a week ago, 100 percent planned a week ago," Petke said after the game at IMG Academies.
Espindola, a forward who had to be reminded by Petke not to play as hard as he did in practice, was given the day off to rest.
"Like a couple of players this week, yesterday we maybe went a little harder in practice than we thought," Petke said. "He has no injury, no issue. He's maybe a little tired. Maybe this is the time right now to concentrate on the day before. He ran a lot. We have next week."
The Red Bulls return home from their first pre-season training stint later on Friday. They will fly back here on Monday to continue training before meeting Malmo (Sweden) in an exhibition game on Thursday.
