Red Bulls overcome rough start to rally for a 2-2 draw with RSL in Diamond Cup opener

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Red Bulls overcame a nightmare start to rally for a 2-2 draw with Real Salt Lake in both team's opening match of the Tucson Desert Diamond Cup at Kino Sports Complex on Wednesday night.

The Red Bulls remained unbeatean in the pre-season, moving to 2-0-1.

RSL grabbed a two-goal advantage with the Major League Soccer pre-season match only three minutes old.

Former RSL defender Jamison Olave and supplemental draft choice and midfielder Michael Bustamante scored for New YOrk, the latter recording the equalizer in the 61st minute.

RSL struck a minute into the pre-season match before doubling the lead a scant two minutes later.

Only a minute into the match, Joao Plata gave RSL a 1-0 lead. Plata played a role in Real's second goal in the third minute. He placed a shot on net that goalkeeper Santiago Castano saved, but midfielder Cole Grossman tallied for a 2-0 Red Bulls deficit.

The Red Bulls’ persistence paid off in the 30th minute with Olave scoring against his former club. Juninho’s poorly cleared corner kick fell to Olave in the six yard box and the defender hammered it in with his right foot. New York kept its foot on the pedal and midfielder Tim Cahill beat Saunders five minutes from the break with a header off a Dax McCarty pass that slammed off the crossbar.

New York made eight changes at halftime and tied the game in the 61st minute. Left back Roy Miller found space on the left wing and his cross into the box found Bustamante, who fired it into the back of the net.
