TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Red Bulls wound up battling the elements and the Seattle Sounders at the Tucson Desert Diamond Cup on Wednesday night.

While snow -- that's right -- snow fell in the southwestern state in the second half, New York continued its winless ways in the pre-season tournament, losing to the Sounders, 2-0, at the Kino Sports Complex.

The result meant the Red Bulls (0-2-1) will play the New England Revolution in Saturday night's third-place match. Real Salt Lake will meet Seattle in the final.

Alex Caskey scored in the first half for the Sounders while Honduran international Mario Martinez added a late insurance goal.

Team captain Thierry Henry did not play, leaving Fabian Espindola as the lone striker up front. So, the Red Bulls' attack was not at full strength and lacked bite.

Four minutes into the match, Eriq Zavaleta took down Espindola at the top of the penalty area and was awarded a yellow card.

Then Juninho had the Red Bulls' first scoring chance in the fifth minute as the Brazilian midfielder sent a free kick over the defensive wall and went just wide right.

Espindola had his first opportunity in the 21st minute, but his 25-yard shot sailed high.

Eight minutes later, New York goalkeeper Luis Robles came out of the net to block a Seattle attempt at the left end of the penalty area.

Juninho tried a corner kick in the 31st minute, as central defender Jamison Olave's header was caught by goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann.

Hahnemann was called on four minutes later, as he dived to the ground to save Espindola's shot.

The Sounders grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the 36th minute. Robles parried away a Travis Bowen shot as Caskey put home a rebound from the right side.

Connor Lade, starting at midfield in this game, fired a shot right into the arms of Hahnemann in the 44th minute.

Red Bulls Academy product Amando Moreno tried to equalize in the 55th minute, but his shot sailed just past the left post off a Michael Bustamante feed.

Martinez doubled the score as he picked up a loose ball and ripped home a long-range shot in the 78th minute.
