With pre-season soon coming to a close, the Red Bulls are closing in on inking two players to contracts as they continue an overhaul of the roster ahead of the season opener at Portland on March 3.
According to sources within Major League soccer, the club has signed SuperDraft second-round pick Ian Christianson and supplemental selection Michael Bustamante in deals that will be announced shortly. According to the league source, Red Bulls head coach Mike Petke was impressed with both players.
Christianson has earned rave reviews during pre-season training from Petke as well as starting central midfielder Dax McCarty. A standout at Georgetown University, Christianson came up through the Chicago Fire’s youth development system and has seen time at youth national team camps.
Selected No. 13 overall in the MLS Supplemental Draft, Bustamante was four times named to the America East All-Conference first team during a standout career at Boston University. A crafty midfielder, he showed well enough in January during the MLS Combine while playing along the backline but he’s looked comfortable on the ball as part of the midfield during preseason.
