Petke: Sam's red card was 'a bit justified'

Mike Petke on Lloyd Sam's red card: “I really believe – and this may be one of the few times I don’t say something against the refs – it was a judgment call that, either way, would’ve been justified."

Midfielder Lloyd Sam saw red on Sunday, though Red Bulls head coach Mike Petke certainly didn't see red when talking about his midfielder's ejection on Tuesday.

Petke, who was fined $2,000 by Major League Soccer for his criticim of referee Geoff Gamble after a 2-2 home draw with the Columbus Crew in May, thought Lloyd Sam's red card was "a bit justified" in the Red Bull' 3-0 loss at the Philadelphia Union on Sunday.

“I really believe – and this may be one of the few times I don’t say something against the refs – it was a judgment call that, either way, would’ve been justified. I believe it was a bit justified that he did get a red card," Petke said during his weekly Tuesday conference call with the Red Bulls media.

“Perhaps another ref in MLS, or around the world would’ve went the other way with a warning. But overall, he did show his cleats, the ref made the call and he is justified in that.”

Sam was shown the door on a straight red card by Baldomero Toledo after challenging Union midfielder Danny Cruz on a 50-50 ball.

“My initial thoughts are gpoing by the laws of the game or whatever, he did show his studs," Petke said. "I don’t think it was vicious. I think they both went down into something. It was a judgement call by the ref that either way could be justified,’’ said Petke. “If you look at the replay, I didn’t initially go crazy on the red card. I was angry and upset. But looking at it now, it's honestly not even in my head.”

Sam will miss Sunday's 2 p.m. home game against the Houston Dynamo.

The Red Bulls, however, will get central defender Jamison Olave and central midfielder Juninho, who missed the match with a red card and a yellow-card suspension, respectively, will return on Sunday.
