HANOVER, N.J. -- With Kosuke Kimura possibly shelved for the year, the Red Bulls depth at outside back got a much needed jolt this week with the return of Connor Lade to the training field.
Lade, who has been sidelined the past few weeks with a knee injury, did some light training last week but was a full-go on Tuesday and again on Wednesday as the Red Bulls gear-up for a trip to Columbus.
It is tremendous timing for the Red Bulls as Lade adds versatility and depth at both outside back positions as well as on the flank in the midfield.
“He looks sharp, he looks fit, he’s working hard which is very nice,” head coach Mike Petke told BigAppleSoccer.com after training on Wednesday. “Definitely, hopefully he’s a 100 percent option this weekend to travel with us. We’ll take it from there. As long as we know he’s an option, we’ll take it from there.”
When asked how much Lade could play against the Crew, Petke would only say that “It’s a tough one to answer” and later added that “He’s a definitely an option for depth for us this weekend.”
Midfielder Lloyd Sam, who was injured last week after reeling in a goal and an assist in a 3-2 win over Sporting Kansas City, did not train on Tuesday or Wednesday. He was limited to working with the team’s trainers inside the facility. The injury is believed to be to his quadriceps.
Petke didn’t rule Sam out for this weekend but it sounded like a slim chance.
“I don’t foresee him being available this weekend,” Petke said. “If he is, it’s a bonus.”
