A DESERVING SHOT
Petke: Ream deserved to be on 30-man roster
Red Bulls head coach Mike Petke felt that former teammate and defender Tim Ream was deserving of being part of the 30-man preliminary roster for U.S. National Team training camp.
Ream, who played with the Red Bulls for two seasons before joining the Bolton Wanderers in 2012, enjoyed an outstanding season with the English club, winning Bolton player of the year honors.
"The one thing I was hoping for and I think was deserving, at least for the initial roster, was Tim Ream," Petke said on his weekly conference call with the Red Bulls media. "It's not because he played here and not because he's a good friend of mine. Just because he went over to a tough league, had a bit of a rough go last year.
"The next thing you know he's player of the year, playing 40-something straight games. The games I've watched him he's done very well at a number of positions, whether it be left back, center back. a defensive or holding midfielder; well at all of them. I thought that he would possibly get a look in there.
"Other than that, it would be foolish of me to say that I disagree with certain things. Jurgen [Klinsmann, U.S. coach] has done a tremendous job with the U.S. team. They have a tough task, obviously. I think he did a good job with selection, other than my buddy Tim Ream."
