HARRISON, N.J. – Ronaldinho was never target of the New York Red Bulls. Not here, not now, not ever – so says sporting director Andy Roxburgh.
In an exclusive interview with BigAppleSoccer.com on Saturday night following the Red Bulls dramatic 2-1 home win over the New England Revolution, Roxburgh squashed any talk of the former Brazilian international joining his New York club.
Last Wednesday and again this past Friday, BigAppleSoccer.com twice reported utilizing highly placed league sources that the Red Bulls would not be interested in signing the aging Brazilian, now fresh out of contract. Despite numerous international reports linking the player with the Red Bulls, BigAppleSoccer.com continued to report that Ronaldinho was not Red Bull-bound.
On Saturday night, Roxburgh confirmed that Ronaldinho won't be a Red Bull.
“Nobody has ever approached us. We haven't been approached by anybody mentioning Ronaldinho,” Roxburgh told BigAppleSoccer.com. “And the name suddenly cames at us and the answer is no.”
Goal.com reported last week that Red Bull representatives had met with the agent for Ronaldinho during the World Cup. Roxburgh seemed amused that any meeting would link him to the club and he said he hasn't had any contact with the player or his agent. He didn't dismiss that a meeting took place but he indicated that it wasn't about the player signing (and the Goal.com report never indicated that a contract was discussed or offered by Red Bull to the player).
“Who's that? Who's Red Bull representatives? Somebody who sells Red Bull?” Roxburgh said.
“Who knows? All I'm saying is this, as the sporting director of this club, and I can speak also on behalf of my other colleagues in the business, we have not been approached about him. Nobody has offered us Ronaldinho. No one has said 'How much money?'
"I saw his name but I've never talked to Ronaldinho or his people or made any offers. And the answer is we wouldn't be doing it anyway. It's not a matter of did we or didn't we? Or who spoke to him or who didn't speak to him? A great player by the way, fantastic player by the way. He's not for here.”
